What to Learn During Quarantine

Tagalog Version (Click Here)

Due to the extended community quarantine (ECQ), we probably have a lot more free time now. Although the ECQ in Metro Manila officially ends on May 15, we should still continue social distancing and go out only for work and basic necessities. For now it seems the only way we’ll be safe is when we all get vaccinated against this pandemic.

Anyway, for today’s lesson, let’s look at what Orison Swett Marden, one of my favorite authors wrote:

Our todays are the blocks with which we build our future. If these are defective, the whole structure of our life will correspond… Power and fortune are hidden away in the hours and moments as they pass, awaiting the eye that can see, the ear that can hear, the hand that can do.

Unfortunately, right now it’s not that simple. While we tell ourselves that we should really use the time to be more productive, read more books, put more time towards our goals, maybe start a side business or something else, you probably find that it’s not that easy especially as time goes on.

What to Learn During Quarantine

There’s a reason why it’s hard to be productive in a time of crisis. In Abraham Maslow’s “hierarchy of needs”, the need for food/water and safety are more important than self-actualization. It’s hard to think about self-improvement and achieving our life’s goals and dreams when we’re worried about getting sick and dying from this pandemic.

It feels like living in a house surrounded by landmines or a forest fire. It’s hard to stay calm and organize your life when even going out to buy groceries is fraught with danger.

Obviously, the stresses and worries of trying to survive during this Covid-19 pandemic take its toll on us psychologically. For now, it’s don’t worry too much about productivity. The best thing right now would be to do whatever productive things we can, and then just take a break when we feel burnt out.

In any case, what can we try during quarantine?

Try learning a few exercises?

Learn some money management tips?

Learn a new hobby or practice your talents?

We all have different skills, talents, and hobbies. While I personally enjoy drawing and digital art, some of you might enjoy singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, or some other hobby. Since we have the time, why not practice and refine our skills?

Maybe start a blog, website, or YouTube channel?

Those are just a few of my suggestions, and in the end you are the one who will decide and act. You can do a lot of things even though our world seems limited by the quarantine, but you can also take this time to rest and reflect about life.

This is your life, so you are in charge. For now though, I hope you stay safe during these times.
