It’s around 6 to 7pm every day when I commute from work. While walking home, I pass by an overpass frequented by many commuters.
There on the sidewalks, I see him a few times a week. Sitting on the ground, his knees are tucked in his oversized shirt, grayed with grime. His skin is covered in filth, his hair curly, long, and unkempt, and his face sullen and expressionless. On his hand is a dirty plastic cup, obviously used and discarded by someone else, and he always held it outstretched in front of him. A silent beg for alms.
I drop a five-peso coin and continue my walk home.
At least once every week or two, I see him on the same spot, wearing the same clothes, and doing the same things. And I drop a five peso coin in his cup or outstretched hand.
Week after week, he gets a few coins from pedestrians. Week after week, he’s still there. How much should we give for him to afford better clothes? How much should we give for him to afford a home? How much should we give for him to earn a living?
No matter how much money we give, he’s still there, sitting miserably and asking for more alms.
Most of us, especially those in the middle class, are the same as that beggar.
We work and work to earn money, but no matter how much we work or how much we earn, there are always things we cannot afford. We want that new car, computer, or other gadget. We want better food and a better home. We want to travel and enjoy life… but like that beggar, we simply can’t afford it. The scale may be different, but the problem is the same.
I’ve had a thought…
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
What if that beggar learns to cook and sell food to hungry pedestrians?
What if that beggar learns to craft and sell furniture, learn to build houses and apartments, or learn medicine to heal sick people?
What if that beggar learns to start a business and expand it to buy and sell products all over the world?
Would that beggar still need to beg for alms when he starts earning millions of pesos every month? I don’t think so.
Now, what if YOU learned to do better at your job and learned leadership and management skills to get promoted?
What if you learned to start a side business and expand it to double or triple your income, or better?
What if you learned to invest your money in stocks, bonds, real estate, and other assets to earn millions?
What if you learned how to earn the life you desire?

Maybe someday, a simple post, a simple paragraph, a simple IDEA here will ignite a spark in your heart and mind and illuminate your way to a better destiny. I can only hope that spark will reach the beggar too.
