An Unforgettable Lesson from Jim Carrey: Do what You Love

“Do what you love” is a piece of advice that many life coaches teach, and, even if few will recommend that you make the career leap right away, it’s still something you need to make time for.

Some time ago my friend and I were discussing career changes and he told me that, although he wanted to try writing too, he was too scared to leave the secure paychecks provided by an office job. It’s perfectly understandable as, although we’re both single, he lives alone and he has a lot of bills to pay while I can still live with my family. I have also invested a part of my salary for the past six years so my investments give me adequate cashflow for a sort of mini financial independence.

That little discussion of ours, by the way, reminded me of Jim Carrey’s commencement speech at Maharishi University and his “do what you love” lesson (You can find the full video and transcript at www.mum.edu here):

Malaking Hakbang Palusong: Pagbabago ng Career

Sabi ni W. L. Bateman “Kapag ginagawa mo palagi ang nakasanayan mong gawin, ang makukuha mo lang ay ang palagi mong nakukuha.” Alam mo kung paano tinuturo palagi ng mga life coaches na kapag nanatili ka sa trabahong ayaw mo at hindi ka nagsikap para sa kinabukasan mo, hindi ka aasenso? Ang desisyon tungkol sa pagbabago ng career ay hindi madali, pero minsan kailangan mo talaga itong gawin.

Panahon na para sa Pagbabago

Nagtrabaho ako sa isang Business-process outsourcing (BPO) na kumpanya sa nakaraang anim na taon (January 2010 hanggang January 2016) at marami akong natutunan doon. Nagkaroon ako ng napakaraming kaibigan at masayang karanasan, pero ang mga pagbabago sa opisina noong nakaraang buwan ay hindi na tama para sa akin kaya naisipan ko nang umalis.

Bakit ako nagsulat tungkol dito? Kapag ikaw mismo ay hindi pa umaalis sa trabahong hindi mo gusto, baka mabigyan kita ng lakas ng loob para maghanap ng mas-mabuting daan sa buhay.

A Great Leap Forward: Choosing to Change Careers

W. L. Bateman said “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, and you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got.” You know how life coaches often seem to keep teaching people that they’d get nowhere if they simply stay in that boring office job they hate instead of working on their dreams? The decision to change careers is not an easy one to make, but sometimes, you just have to take that leap of faith to make everything fall into place.

Time for a Change

I’ve worked at the same “Business-process outsourcing (BPO)”-type company for about six years now (January 2010 to January 2016) and I’ve learned a lot from all the experiences I’ve gained. I’ve made friends and had a ton of fun, but the latest changes in the office environment didn’t sit well with me and I realized that it was finally time to go.

Why did I choose to write about it? If you’re still having doubts about leaving a job you don’t like, then maybe reading this will give you the courage to take the leap and find a better path in life.

Management and Leadership Skills: Ilang aral para sa Career Success

Kamakailan lang nanghingi ng ilang lessons tungkol sa mga natutunan ko sa ilang taon ko bilang isang Team Leader ang isa sa mga managers namin, at hiningi rin niya ang ilan mga natutunan ko sa mga librong nabasa ko.

Hindi ko sasabihing expert ako at alam ko ang lahat ng management and leadership skills sa mundo, pero naisip ko lang…

Marami sa natutunan ko mula sa mga karanasan ko at sa mga nabasa ko (sa mga librong isinulat ng mga magagaling na leader at manager) ay makakatulong sa mga nagsisimula pa lang.

Ang isang malaking bahagi ng pagiging isang Leader ay ang succession at coaching (o pagturo sa mga kasunod natin), at responsibilidad nating ituro ang mga nalalaman natin sa mga mangangailangan nito.

Masayang maging Leader, at ito ang ilang mga aral na ibabahagi ko sa iyo.

Just recently some of the managers in our company told me to write about what I’ve learned during my few years as a Team Leader, as well as the lessons I’ve learned from the leadership books I’ve read.

Now, I won’t claim to be an expert with all the management and leadership skills in the world, but I was thinking…

Many of what I’ve learned from my experiences and what I’ve read (books written by great leaders and managers) can and WILL help those who are just starting out.

One major part of a Leader’s job is succession and coaching, and it’s our job to teach what we know to everyone who’ll need it.

Being a Leader is fun, I can tell you that, and here are a few short lessons I want to share with you.
