If we’re talking about books containing timeless wisdom, you’ve probably heard about books like Sun Tzu’s Art of War, Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince, Miyamoto Musashi’s The Book of Five Rings, and several others. There’s one more that I will recommend to you, and that’s Baltasar Gracian’s The Art of Worldly Wisdom, a book containing over 300 aphorisms and lessons that still are still extremely valuable today.

What is Inflation? (Economics and Investing Basics)

The inflation rate made the news last 2018, but judging from the comments section on news articles, it seems that a lot of people don’t really understand what it means or how it works. For example, some people were praising the unusually high inflation rate like it’s a good thing, and they don’t seem to understand how bad the situation was especially as they say other countries experience it too.

Some people also mistakenly thought that the higher rate was because there was an increase in the number of jobs and the income increase was devaluing the peso, when that’s actually false (this was a “cost-push” type thanks to a then-recent tax law that also has an excise tax on fuel).

So what’s inflation anyway? Let’s discuss the basics, so keep reading to learn more!

Ano ang Inflation? (Basics ng Economics at Investing)

Noong 2018 nabalita sa news ang napakataas na inflation rate, pero noong binasa ko ang mga comments sa news articles, parang marami ang hindi nakakaintindi sa inflation at kung paano ito gumagana. Halimbawa, pinupiri ng ibang tao ang pagtaas ng inflation rate dahil akala nila mabuti ito, at parang hindi rin nila naiintindihan kung gaano kalala ang sitwasyon dahil sinasabi nila na mataas rin daw naman inflation sa ibang bansa.

Akala rin ng iba, ang inflation sa Pilipinas ay tumaas dahil dumami daw ang nagkatrabaho at ang pagdami ng mga sumasahod ay nagdulot ng pagbaba ng halaga ng peso, pero hindi naman ito totoo (ito ay “cost-push” dahil sa bagong tax law at sa nilalaman din nitong excise tax sa fuel).

Ano ang inflation? Talakayin natin ang basics ngayon, kaya ipagpatuloy mo lang ang pagbabasa!

Kung nagsimula ka nang magbasa tungkol sa investing, malamang may narinig ka na tungkol sa investment na tinatawag na bonds. Tulad ng stocks, real estate (lupa), at mutual funds/ETFs, ang mga bonds ay isa ring popular na investment. Habang mas mababa ang yield (perang pwede mong kitain) ng mga ito, hindi sila masyadong volatile o pabago-bago ang presyo. Bukod pa doon, iba rin ang galaw ng presyo ng mga ito kumpara sa mga stocks at mutual funds.
