An Unforgettable Lesson from Jim Carrey: Do what You Love

February 21, 2016 by Ray L. 11 Comments

“Do what you love” is a piece of advice that many life coaches teach, and, even if few will recommend that you make the career leap right away, it’s still something you need to make time for.

Some time ago my friend and I were discussing career changes and he told me that, although he wanted to try writing too, he was too scared to leave the secure paychecks provided by an office job. It’s perfectly understandable as, although we’re both single, he lives alone and he has a lot of bills to pay while I can still live with my family. I have also invested a part of my salary for the past six years so my investments give me adequate cashflow for a sort of mini financial independence.

That little discussion of ours, by the way, reminded me of Jim Carrey’s commencement speech at Maharishi University and his “do what you love” lesson (You can find the full video and transcript at www.mum.edu here):

After reading and following the advice of so many personal finance and investment books like “The Millionaire Next Door,” “The Motley Fool Million Dollar Portfolio,” “The Bogleheads’ Guide to Investing,” and several others, there are several lessons that come up again and again due to their importance. If you’re a beginner and you want to learn how to invest in stocks, then these are the 10 crucial lessons that you need to know:

1. STUDY FIRST

Warren Buffett, one of the wealthiest billionaires of the 21st century, said that “risk comes from not knowing what you’re doing.” Whether it’s from books, seminars, blog articles, or anything else, you must read and learn from the best investing guides out there. If you don’t you will likely waste money on “investments” that are doomed to fail, and you will also be VERY easy to scam.

Like what Jim Rohn said: “Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” If you start properly educating yourself, you will most likely learn the next nine lessons on your own (and you will also learn several more valuable and advanced lessons as well).

How to Choose the Best Books on Anything: The Self-Improvement and Non-Fiction Hunter’s Guide

Sometimes, all you need is just one crucial piece of info in order to succeed, and one of the best ways to find it is to learn from the writings of those who have already succeeded at it. Here’s my short guide on choosing the best books about anything you need to accomplish.

(But First!) Why Books over Free Blog Posts and other Internet Resources?
  • In general, most well-written books are organized well from start to finish. Although you might find the same information in a collection of blog posts, their ideas will tend to be fragmented and you might have a more difficult time synthesizing and combining the information into something workable.
  • Unlike blog posts which, by necessity, need to be short and thus cannot go into too much detail on certain topics, well-written books can and do go in-depth about their subjects and do it as a consistent and thematic whole.
  • This is, most likely, the most important one: Since literally almost ANYONE can write a blog, you’ll find MILLIONS of posts (and “free” eBooks) out there that are garbage, like plagiarized content, black hat SEO spam, etc. (so says the blogger, though I DO promise excellence, you know). Books, on the other hand, get evaluated by editors before they get published and that’s the first way to screen out the trash. The second safeguard are unbiased book reviews that are posted all over the internet. A quick read of those reviews will tell you if the information contained in a book is right for you or not.

31 Self Improvement Tips to change your Destiny

Similar to how mastering the laws of physics and aerodynamics can allow you to fly, learning and mastering the laws of daily life will let you accomplish far more than those who don’t. If you wish to achieve your full potential, then here are 31 self improvement tips you should learn and remember:

For a Better Future
  1. Take Responsibility for Your Life

What do most UNSUCCESSFUL people have in common? They love blaming others and making excuses, especially for their own mistakes and bad habits. It’s always their boss’ fault, the economy’s fault, their government’s fault. Since they never admit to their OWN faults, they keep waiting for the world to change and they never realize that they personally hold the key to bettering their lives. If you want to someday become successful, then you must remember that YOU are the only one in charge of your destiny.

  1. Set BIG Goals

Like I said in a previous article, those who live without setting any definite goals waste their lifetimes achieving nothing worthwhile. If you spend your time worrying and reacting to the problems that keep popping up every now and then, you’ll wake up on your deathbed realizing and regretting that you’ve never really lived.

How to Save Money: Three Thought Patterns to Unlearn NOW

Imagine a robot bumping into boulders, walking into walls, and falling off ledges while moving around the workplace. Because of that programmed pattern, it gets seriously damaged and needs repairs every week. Although it knows that being damaged is bad, it still can’t stop itself from bumping into walls or falling off ledges as those are what it’s been programmed to do. Humans behave in a similar way and knowing how to change that is the number one key to learn how to save money:

If we change our “bad programming” or bad spending habits, we will certainly stop damaging our financial future.

“The happiness of most people is not ruined by great catastrophes or fatal errors, but by the repetition of slowly destructive little things.” – Ernest Dimnet
