What is the Subconscious Mind? – A Quick Explainer

April 10, 2023 by Ray L. 1 Comment

Tagalog Version (Click Here)

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.

— Carl Jung

Everything we do and everything that we are, our successes and failures, happiness and despair, all come from how we use our mind. While we can control most of our thoughts, it’s the part which we cannot directly control which has the biggest impact in our lives. It’s called the subconscious, and it’s so important that Carl Jung, one of the most famous psychologists in the world, calls it the basis of our destiny. While we cannot directly control it, we can, however, influence and improve it in order to improve our quality of life.

Why did I write this article? While most people in the Western world know about the subconscious, not a lot of people in the Philippines where I am from understand it. In fact, they think mental and psychological disorders like depression and anxiety are just people being overdramatic (“kaartehan”), and that patients just need to pray to get “cured”. It’s not. They’re as real as high blood pressure and diabetes, but they’re illnesses affecting the neurochemicals in the brain. Just like how prayers cannot instantly lower cholesterol levels or regrow chopped off limbs, they’re not direct cures for psychological issues like depression, anxiety, autism, and others like them.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s start the lesson!

How to Gain Confidence: 3 Principles You Can Learn Right Now

Having confidence in yourself opens new possibilities, gives you the courage to take opportunities as they appear, and increases your chances of succeeding at what you want to do. Unfortunately, as we make mistakes and fail at certain things (hey, none of us are perfect) and as other people shame and discourage us, we learn to fear failure, doubt our own abilities, and become constantly discouraged.

How do we gain more confidence? How do we gain the kind of courage that will let us become more successful in life? Here are three ways you can do just that.

First, a MAJOR disclaimer:
Confidence is NOT recklessness. True confidence is backed by knowledge and expertise and is a key to getting good results. Recklessness, on the other hand, comes from a place of ignorance and will usually lead to humiliation and disaster. In real world terms, confidence is the expert who has trained for decades to become a master and avoids trouble (but wins tournaments). Recklessness is the punk who acts tough, harasses people, and then gets his ass kicked sent to the hospital.

My Own Self-improvement Work for 2023

January 10, 2023 by Ray L. Leave a Comment

Another new year, another occasion to start something new. While you may think it’s odd, I’ve actually already started most of my New Year’s Resolutions last December of 2022. I wanted to remind myself that you don’t NEED to wait until January before you make positive changes in life. You can do it any time you want. In fact, you should actually do it as often as you can. Life is, after all, a constant and neve rending process of growth.

While I often try to think of ways to improve, the lack of energy and motivation coupled with the multitude of problems that life throws at you make things slightly more difficult.

Unfortunately, life has a painful way of shocking you awake when you get complacent, and while I won’t get into any details I’ve just had a big one last November.

In any case, this year I’ve set some new personal targets for myself. I won’t go into too much detail with those either since a lot of things in life are best kept secret, but here are some of the things I plan to work on for 2023.

Read more: My Own Self-improvement Work for 2023

Main Goals:

  1. Increase income – Always easier said than done, but always worth attempting. There are many options: I can improve my current income sources, I can look for new ways to earn, I can retry old methods, or I can try something else. The main goal is to earn more wealth for 2023.
  2. Personal Growth – While I try to stick to this all the time, I have gotten stuck in a rut during the past two years. It’s time to rekindle that passion and ambition and try a lot of things to become a better and more amazing person this year onwards.
  3. Improve relationships – A hint to what happened last November. This will follow the second goal, but I’m setting it as goal number 3 to set the law of attraction in motion. It’s said that if you look for good relationships then you will likely fail, but if you aim to become a better person then good relationships will likely follow. If you are a high value individual (e.g. a wise and competent expert), then you will attract excellent people who will add value to your life.

Aside from my three main goals, here are some new habits that I will start, or have already started:

  1. Eat new things: Maca powder, spirulina powder, ground flax seeds, etc.
  2. Train in new exercise forms. They’re like yoga asanas, but for different arts.
  3. Improve daily morning stretches. Instead of quick “bouncing” stretches that can damage tendons and ligaments, the small change of extending the stretches to 30 seconds improves flexibility.
  4. Improve Qi Gong breathing techniques. From experience, I know that proper breathing technique helps during extremely stressful situations. This year, I’ll study the advanced tips from Bruce Frantzis’ book. They’re easy enough to practice while sitting in front of the computer.
  5. Add new exercises to my weekly workout sessions. For months I’ve been doing the same old bicep curls, squats, and calf raises. This time, I’m learning new exercises for a better full body workout. Thankfully there’s plenty of free guides all over YouTube.
  6. Improve book reading habit. Since I’ve just been rereading my old books these past two years, this time I’m going to start buying and finishing more new books as my budget allows.
  7. Increase frequency of YourWealthyMind blog posts. This is part of my increased income goal as it improves SEO and Ad revenue. I’m doing this by making daily writing a habit again.
  8. Prayer, visualization, and meditation habit. Those will keep me focused on the goals that I want to accomplish and they will also stir up the brain’s reticular activating system to think of more ideas and notice opportunities.
  9. Commit to a weekly lifestyle and goals review habit.
  10. Revive old hobbies that I stopped doing (e.g. drawing, streaming, etc.).

Those are the ones that I will list for now. Once those become automatic, it will be time to find things I can improve on and/or learn things that I can add to my life. There’s always time especially if I can reduce all those time-wasters in life (social media browsing, YouTube, etc.).

One of the most important things we have to remember is that if we want to live the kind of life that we want, then we must commit to constant and never ending improvement. Of course, our actions should all have a consistent long-term end goal or else a lot of effort will get wasted. In any case, once we get that self-improvement habit and make it consistent, the benefits will add up over time. If we do things right, then we might just achieve those things that we’ve always dreamed of.

Anyway, I’ve told you some of the things I’m working on this 2023 and thankfully I’m doing well on most of them so far.

How about you? What are your self-improvement plans this year?

How do you define happiness? Is it achieving your most important goals? Is it obtaining the things you want most? Is it being grateful and content with what you have achieved so far? Is it in living without major problems, as well as in having the ability to solve life’s problems as they come?

I’ve always been a fan of self-help and self-improvement books. Most of the better ones contain a lot of lessons that can make you a better person and improve your quality of life, and the very best ones not only contain the usual inspirational stories and lessons, they are also backed by psychological research. Great quality books, videos, and seminars won’t just teach you skills that can lead to better opportunities (e.g. people skills, time management, productivity, etc.), they can also teach you mental and psychological skills that can let you become more successful at the opportunities that you find. Aside from that, they can teach you how to anticipate and manage all the stresses and future problems that you’ll face in life.

There are so many great things out there that we can learn, and they can definitely improve our present and our future. Keep reading, because here are five reasons why self-improvement brings happiness.
